Virtualized Labs: Phase 1 – LOCAL Virtualization

In order to improve the department laboratories we have invested a lot time (and I mean looooong) 聽searching for a method to become independent of the hardware (HW) and get a SINGLE COMMON IMAGE 聽for ALL the Laboratories that we could deploy in separate hardware (eg a modern pC with Core i3 or a slightly older Core 2 Duo or even lower). The Hardware and Software (SW) mobility limits us in many cases, for example when we buy new machines or recycle one that has given us.

SOLUTION: use a free, modern and very lightweight OS (CentOS minimal install) that run through VIRTUALBOX a complete virtual operating system and store it in a local file.

For those who do not know much about virtualization will I summarize: it is a way to emulate a different our operating system and repackage聽inside a container with all our software already installed and ready to run on different platforms (mac, windows, linux).

You have seen in this post entries that say phase 1 … are there more steps? … the answer is … YES … and… what will be the next step? … Answer: the complete execution of virtual machines in the cloud (something like VDI desktop virtualization), that is, by light terminal (or similarly cheap pc) can access a complete virtual system or virtualized desktop full. Later we will write about it … soon.

New Server for virtualization in DOE

Hello:hp logo

To expand the farm of servers of the department we have purchased a new server replacing the old DOESERVER (who had 9 years old) with a new one, also obtaining that the replaced one becomes one more virtualized inside of the ESXi’s farm to virtualize many others.

It is an HP Proliant DL180 G6 with two Quad Xeon processors, 36 GB of RAM and 2 3TB disks in RAID1.

I have some photos for your knowledge and / or pleasure.

Moving a Virtual Machine / Back to record it properly in the inventory

vmwre logo

During the current use of virtualization tools like VMware Server or VMware vSphere ESXi hypervisor is very common for us to create virtual machines for test and then delete “promptly”.

I say quickly, for seeing that ye may be that you erase a virtual machine of your inventory in a “no clean” look of hurry or not enough. It posibleque delete a virtual machine but do not delete this data in the Datastore, leaving it with “virtual trash” forgotten in a warehouse.

A. – Get the machine to another datastore again.

2. – Go to the old machine and remove from inventory.

3. – Go to datstore again, and browse to the vmx “add to inventory” (do this step if you are looking to move to a new one)

See you soon.

Disadvantages of having a virtualized vCenter

The most serious:

The host containing it can not patch it with the plugin “Update Manager” VMware ESXi as to update operations must shut down all virtual machines that hang from the host and put the server in maintenance mode. Virtualized vCenter, if we stop we will not have connection to our infrastructure. A host of others if we can maintain them without any problem.

Other possible drawbacks are the same as those derived from virtualization, such as overloading of a machine per CPU or memory, disk units, …

Guide to Installing VMware ESXi 4.1 (2 Part): Post-Configuration Steps

There are many things that we set in our ESXi servers, here are some of the most relevant and / or those of the I’m agreeing.

Steps to take Post-Configuration:

1. – Enable ssh port to manage the ESXi console

You just have to sit in front of the physical server and login as “root” by pressing “F2″, go to the option “Troubleshooting Options” and enable ssh using “Enable Remote Tech Support”.

Pasos de聽Instalaci贸n:hp-proliant-ml330-g6-server

Error Ubuntu “No init Found”

mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init
No init found

… “Houston, we have a problem
